Why CFA?
The Gold Standard in Investment Management
Earning the CFA charter takes years and three progressively harder exams. The cumulative pass rate across all levels hovers around 20% — which is exactly why employers take it seriously.
For Indian finance professionals, it travels well. Asset managers in Mumbai and investment banks in London both recognise it the same way. The main friction is cost — at standard rates, all three levels together exceed ₹3 lakh.
That's where scholarships come in. The CFA Institute's own scholarship programs exist specifically to close this gap — and they're more accessible than most people realise.
The Financial Reality
CFA Fees Without vs. With a Scholarship
Here's what you'd spend at standard rates — and what the Access Scholarship changes.

How to Apply
Step-by-Step
How to Apply for a CFA Scholarship
Scholarship windows open months before each exam and close fast — sometimes in weeks. Work through all five steps before you miss the window.
Step 1 of 5
- 01
First things first
Create Your CFA Institute Account
Head to cfainstitute.org and register for a free account. Your name needs to match your government-issued photo ID exactly — any mismatch causes problems at the exam centre. This account handles everything: registrations, scholarships, and results.
Use a permanent email address. All scholarship decision emails go here, and you don't want to miss them.
- 02
Timing matters most
Track the Scholarship Window
Log in and go to Register for CFA Exam → Apply for Scholarship. Windows typically open 5–6 months before the exam and close within 4–8 weeks — sometimes sooner once slots fill up. If you miss it, you're waiting another 6 months.
Set a reminder to check cfainstitute.org every 8–10 weeks so you never miss an opening.
- 03
The deciding factor
Write Your Financial Need Statement
For the Access Scholarship, this statement is everything. Be specific: your monthly income, your main expenses, and why $1,200 is genuinely out of reach right now. Then explain what the CFA means for your career — which role you're working toward, and how this changes things. Vague applications almost always get rejected.
"I earn ₹35,000/month and the fee is 4 months of savings" lands far better than "I can't afford it."
- 04
Now you wait
Submit and Await the Decision
Decisions come by email within 4–6 weeks. They're final — no appeals process. If you're approved, you'll get a single-use voucher code tied to your exam window. If rejected, reapply next cycle with a sharper statement.
Check your spam folder. Scholarship decision emails end up there more often than you'd expect.
- 05
Final step
Register with Your Voucher
Go back to the exam registration portal, enter your voucher code, and the discount applies automatically. Vouchers expire with the exam window — register as soon as you get your approval email. The scholarship has no effect on the exam itself or your results.
Vouchers are single-use and non-transferable. Don't share them.

Calendar
Key Dates & Scholarship Timelines
Scholarships are tied to exam cycles. Here's how the timing works.
When it Opens
~5–6 Months Before Exam
The scholarship portal opens roughly 5–6 months ahead of the exam sitting. This is your only window to apply for that cycle.
How Long It Stays Open
4–8 Weeks Only
The window closes within 4–8 weeks of opening — sometimes earlier if slots fill. Apply in the first week if you can.
Decision Timeline
4–6 Weeks After Submitting
The CFA Institute sends decisions by email. Approved candidates get a one-time voucher code to use at registration.
After Voucher Received
Register Immediately
Vouchers are window-specific and expire. Register for your exam the moment you receive your approval email.
2025–2026 exam windows: Level I — February, May, August, November. Level II — May, August. Level III — February, August. Scholarship dates vary by window — always check cfainstitute.org for exact dates.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — you can apply to more than one, but only use one voucher per registration. Most people go for the Access Scholarship first since it's the biggest discount. If you also qualify for Women's or Professor, apply to both and take whichever comes through.
Decisions are final and you can't appeal. But you can reapply in the next exam cycle — lots of candidates get rejected once and succeed on the second or third attempt, usually by writing a more specific statement. Early-bird registration is also cheaper than standard rates if you need to register without a scholarship.
No. It only changes what you pay. The exam, the grading, and the CFA designation are identical for every candidate — the CFA Institute doesn't tell anyone you received a scholarship.
Yes — scholarships are tied to individual exam registrations, not the full program. Once you have a statement that's worked, you can reuse and refine it for Levels II and III.
Yes, all scholarships are open globally. Indian candidates are actually well-placed for the Access Scholarship — the standard $1,200 fee is around ₹1 lakh, which is a real financial barrier and makes for a credible application. CFA Society India also distributes Awareness Scholarships; check cfasocietyindia.org for local chapters.
The voucher expires. It's tied to a specific exam window — miss that window and you'll need to reapply in the next cycle. Register the same day you get your approval email if you can.
Competitive — it's open to everyone globally. What separates approved from rejected is specificity. Candidates who explain exactly what they earn, what their costs are, and what the CFA means for their actual career tend to get through. "I can't afford the fee" almost always gets rejected.
